Heartland returns to High River with $80K donation

The cast and crew of CBC Television's Heartland has returned to film in High River, bringing a cheque worth $80,000 to help the Alberta town recover from June floods.

The donation was raised through behind-the-scenes tours offered to the show's fans this summer.

While the show takes place in the fictitious town of Hudson, it's actually filmed in High River. Maggie's Diner, a centrepiece on the show, was destroyed in the flooding. But after months of repairs, the diner is open again.

Heartland filming to resume at High River centrepiece
"Hudson is our home and high river has been very, very good to us over the years and so we felt it was crucial that we give back," said executive producer Tom Cox.

The money will go to a central fund, with a committee deciding how it is spent.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass said having the cast and crew return to High River is "huge" for the town.

"Just makes High River start to feel that little bit more normal again cause this is a regular occurrence that we always had downtown."

Gabriel Hogan in Christmas Song

Though two schools have recently merged into one, students at the newly formed Carter-Cresswell Academy have yet to blend into one harmonious body.  Particularly for the award-winning choral groups of the two former schools, old rivalries die hard. Music teachers Diana Deason (Natasha Henstridge) and Ken Stoddard (Gabe Hogan) are forced to compete for a single music department position by entering dueling musical acts in a televised Christmas song competition.

The success of either group will determine the fate of the music department and will determine who will get the job as the school’s only music director.  As the musical teams duke out their differences at the competition and in the school halls, sparks begin to fly between Diana and Ken--romantic and otherwise. Confused by these sentiments, Diana is forced to reevaluate her priorities and choose what is really worth fighting for.
